One Brother One Sister is a program designed to assist First Responders
Co-Founder of One Brother One Sister, Karyn Hurley, has adopted the mission of helping First Responders after the loss of her brother Michael who served as a Firefighter and was a proud US Veteran.
First Responders face overwhelming adversity, stress and danger in their daily responsibilities which can take a toll on their physical, mental and emotional health. It is our goal to give them the education, resources and support they need to thrive in their lives as well as their careers.
Your support and contributions will enable us to reach and help First Responders throughout the country.
Your generous donation will fund our mission.
The following courses are provided to the One Brother One Sister Program by the Addicted Communities Coalition, an education provider for NAADAC and The Florida Certification Board.
To schedule a Live Course or register for the on-line course, call Karyn Hurley at the number below.
Addiction is statistically devastating to first responders and creates situations that can destroy community safety and trust. Given that in most cases, first responders work within closed, tight knit units, it is especially important that people within those units are trained to deal with issues of addiction, mental health, and trauma.
The Motivational Interventionist Training was designed to address at risk individuals in real life situations where there is an immediate need to intervene in someone’s behaviors. Our training is unique in its configuration that the focus of a successful Intervention relies on the ability to understand and connect with the person who is suffering. That connection, or rapport, can be built utilizing skills in the training from the first moment you speak to the one you are concerned with. This is critical since most opportunities to help people occur not over long periods of time, but in a single conversation.
Addicted Communities Coalition, Motivational Intervention Course is a 1-day training and has 6 CEUs through NAADAC and the Florida Certification Board. ACC also provides ongoing support to their
One Brother One Sister trained interventionists.
The course specifically addresses the following areas:
1. Education into addiction and treatment
2. Recognizing signs and symptomology
3. Understanding adaptable Interventions
4. Skills and Elements of Interventions

In many cases First Responders will seek information and education on specific topics. This section of the website will supply accessible informational writings and media on the specific topics below. Gaining an understanding about what PTSD or Addiction can help our Responders to determine if they need to seek help for themselves or someone else. Specific Trauma Incidents
First Responders will find numerous presentations from both the experiential and the professional viewpoints. This section will allow Responders to access lectures and programs, join group discussions and 12 step meetings, and watch podcasts and programs from around the world.
Access to news, writings and the latest developments and research will assist First Responders to better understand and deal with issues they face. From the news media to the opinions shared in Blogs, the sharing of information is critical to understanding the scope of the issues First Responders face daily. Whether it is a national News Story or the Blog of the son of a fallen Hero, seeing the local, regional, and global impacts of PTSD, Addiction, or any other affliction, can bring us together under one cause.
The website will have dedicated sections for health and nutrition for our First Responders. The information and programs in this portion will provide them with dietary programs and suggestions, exercise routines and programs, toxicity from our environment information and more. Sharing of recipes and fitness suggestions will be welcomed and shared among our Responders. Due to the extreme nature of our Responders jobs, having a healthy body is paramount to the performance of their jobs and their mental stability.
An events calendar will be a focal point of the website. 1B1S will post submitted events and happenings in the First Responder communities to bridge local and regional gaps in participation. By having a central location for posting these events, we hope to create links between departments and communities that may not exist now. If the bond between regions is stronger, the resources of those regions will be shared which gives Responders more possibilities for the assistance they may need.
Having a section of the website for first responders to share information, ask each other questions, or simply connect with like minded people. Postings and replies are anonymous and monitored for content. This would also be a space for prayers and thoughts for those who have been lost in the first responder fellowship.
